One-Hit Wonders of the 90s: 1997

We are at it again! It’s 1997, and there were so many songs that we loved. In the 90s, there were so many One-Hit Wonders that happened. Some bands just made those nostalgic hits that we remember, but we heard nothing else from them. We are going to look back on some of the most popular One-Hit Wonders from the year 1997. Now, to clarify, One-Hit Wonders does not mean it is the only song or album they made. It just means that this song is their only notable/popular song and the only song that charted for them.

Bitch by Meredith Brooks:

Bitch is the adult contemporary single from Meredith Brooks‘ debut album Blurring the Edges. It is the only hit for Brooks. The song would chart for 35 weeks, peaking at number 2 in the United States. Brooks was compared to Alanis Morissette. It is ranked as one of the best songs of the 90s at number 79.

Brooks would continue to make music until 2007. She had other songs that were charted in other countries but never in the top 10.

Tubthumping by Chumbawumba:

Tubthumping is the single from the album Tubthumper by Chumbawamba. The song charted the best in 10 countries at number 1 in 1997. The song spent 31 weeks on the Billboard top 100 charts. Chumbawamba would continue to make records from 1982 to 2012. They would go through many band member changes. They would never reach the success that they did in the 90s with Tubthumping though.

The song is at a couple of sporting events currently, as a hype-up song.

Torn by Natalie Imbruglia:

Torn was originally recorded in 1993 by Lis Sorenson and was covered by Natalie Imbruglia in 1997. The song reached number 1 on the charts in eight countries. It reached the top 10 in 17 countries. The song was a commercial hit.

Imbruglia would continue to make music with mild success. She most recently was on the British Version of the Masked Singer and won.

  1. Bitch is always a good listen. Tubthumping is fun to bump to. I didn’t like Torn when it first came out, but liked it better years later.
